Mandarin International Trading NV was established in 1991. The company started with the distribution of cigarette products from BATCO for a selected area in Suriname. After two years Mitra NV was granted the exclusive distribution of cigarettes throughout Suriname. The cigarettes were first produced locally, but in 2000 the production was moved to WITCO in Trinidad.

Up until 2009 the import of the cigarettes was done by BATCO, but starting from January 2009 the import of the cigarettes is done by Mitra NV themselves. In 1994, a daughter company of Mitra NV opened its doors in Nickerie, which lies in the west of the country.
Mitra NV also started with the distribution of food products and Cricket lighters by Swedish Match in 1999, whereas the distribution of the food products was taken over by its sister company, DTS NV.
In the year 2000, Mitra NV began with the distribution of prepaid telephone cards from Telesur, the country’s largest telecommunication company. In 2003, prepaid mobile cards were added to the portfolio. Since March 2015 Mitra NV also distributes call credits electronically, called E-top up.

Since the end of 2012 Mitra NV has been ISO 9001:2008 certified, for Paramaribo as well as Nickerie. In 2018 Mitra NV received their ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Mitra NV currently employs ±75 persons, in Paramaribo and Nickerie altogether.
